Lincoln Academy Gastonia NC

Actually this is located in the Crowder Mountain area.

Recently I had the opportunity to visit this location. The story goes this school was once an all black school and this girl was heading back home to Atlanta when two men carjacked and raped and murdered her and is said to now be haunted by the teenage girl. The school has since burned down.

Now the Crowder Mountain Golf Course stands where the school used to be. I'm not sure if the school stood where the clubhouse now sits but in that general location. Down the street from the clubhouse is the cemetary. There are no signs or anything indicating there is a cemetary there but if you go down the street you will see a steel gate blocking an entrance. If you walk down the road(it was mowed down and well kept on my visit) you will see a rundown building on the left, walk a little further and you will the headstones. I don't know anything about the graveyard. I didn't get that far the day I was there, it was raining and very muddy although the road wasn't muddy at all.
It appears to be a dumping area especially across the street and on further observation it would appear that possibly bums might be using it as a hangout. It isn't that far from the main road.

I found it quite interesting that a golf course is now where a supposedly haunted place stands. Whether it is haunted I don't know. I don't recommend going alone if you should go at night. It's an interesting place and what makes this place so interesting is that it is bordered not just by the Crowder Mountain State Park on one side but down the road on Sparrow Springs road in the same general area is another haunted spot at a church.

Directions: It is located between Shelby and only a few miles from Gastonia. Going down hwy 74 turn at Archie Whitesides road(there is a Food Lion on hwy 74 and a traffic light where you will turn) in the opposite direction from Food Lion, you'll pass Peach Orchard, turn right at Linwood, go around a couple of curves, you'll see the golf course to your right, at Lincoln Academy road turn right, there is the clubhouse on the right, down the street you'll find the blocked off area that takes you to the cemetary. You cannot see the cemetary from the road you have to walk down the path to be able to see the graveyard. It's a nice little walk, not too far but far enough.
The name of the golf course is Crowder Mountain Golf Course I believe. So if you have any trouble with my directions you can map the golf course and be right there.

I was there during the day and didn't experience anything disturbing or out of the ordinary. Although I founds the woods across the street much more creepy than the cemetary. But it could have just been the idea that there could be homeless hanging out in the area. That would make anyone feel less safe I suppose. And it rather secluded except for a couple of houses at the end of the street.
I give it a must see star, an interesting place. Especially at night but don't go alone and take precautions and drive a reliable vehicle. If you gut says leave, then you should leave. I would have liked to have had more time.
I will delve into the history of the place later.

  1. I grew up all my life just miles from Lincoln academy. my brother was best friends with miss Mitchell who was the sister of one of the monsters that committed this crime.there was never a gang rape of a student that attended the school the school was an all black school that burned, the rape and torture and murder of Kathleen smiley is very true. if you feel any presents going down Lincoln academy rd it could very well be her.if a place should ever tell a story this is the place.

  2. Definitely an eerie place. I remember all the kids from school would go out there on Halloween night hoping to see her ghost. I was always to chicken to go, and besides I didn't believe in ghosts. I was more afraid of the bums that would hang around. Well, about four years ago my friend and I decided to drive out there. All we found was the rubble from what used to be the school. It was getting dark and we decided to get out of there. Well, on our way up to the main road my friend stopped and grabbed my arm. She had this look on her face that I will never forget. I looked up, and saw this purple odd shaped haze coming towards us. My friend looked at me and said "Do you see it too?" And I said "Is it purple?" Right then we knew what we had witnessed and we got out of there. How often do you see purple figures coming towards you?Lets just say I believe in ghosts now.

  3. Back in the 70's, a bunch of us loaded up in a friends, mom's stationwagon and one night drove to the academy. We were all well aware of the legend. Ghosts that night are not what we encounted. In a shell of a house a couple hundred yards west of the clubhouse were a number or ppl inside the house. There was a fire burning inside in the middle of the floor. There was a lot of chanting going on. We knew they were in the middle of a satan worship service. We got out of there very quickly! Talkin about spookie, we were truly very uncomfortable.

  4. I was just down there last night with a few friends. At first we really didnt see anything so we just kept going but we went back down to the sight and we backed up to see where the school was located and one of my friends got out of the car and thats when we saw this figure coming towards us! she got back in the car and we drove a little closer and we stopped and it appeared again. it was the scariest thing ive ever experienced. cults and devil worshiping services also happen there

    1. WOW! Ok, Brandon, let me tell you, as a paranormal investigator, NEVER utilize a Ouija Board nor attempt a seance. When you do stuff like that, you are opening a "flood gate" for souls to attack you and/or your friends. I had a friend do that in my hometown up in NJ and she wound up being possessed and nearly lost her. If you want to capture EVP's, introduce yourself and your party and tell them why you are there. Talk to the spirits as if they are still alive. Ask for a viable sign if they are willing to do so. HOWEVER, if you feel the need you must use a ouija board, contact your local medium or a shaman, have someone that is experienced and knows what to do and how to word things. 99.9% of the time, they will discourage the Board or seance.....psychic mediums will typically channel their energy to contact the dead. For places like this, if you feel you are in danger, just simply leave.

    1. I've hobby hunted the paranormal for over 30 years. If you live in the southern U.S. it's all good.
Any old fort that had prisoners. Best way I know to test your methods. If your results are consistatnly remarkable in multi locations you off an running.
Makes for great day trips, and places to ride horses, or whatever standarized activity your into.

    2. DO NOT use the Ouija Board. Like I explained with Brandon, using the board is like opening up a "flood gate". Souls will attack you if you're not careful. I have seen numerous incidents involving boards and always see the Mocking of Trinity (3 scratches). If you wanna try and contact a spirit, simply do an EVP session and asks simple questions like you would with the living. Be respectful, if they tell you to leave or get out, respect their wishes and simply walk away. I am a paranormal investigator myself and see a lot of crazy stuff happen and have been followed home......you do NOT want that to happen.

  7. ok so here is the real story, Kathleen Smiley was in Atlanta, Ga visting her father she was driving a red vw this was at 10am at 1030am she phoned her mother to tell her she was running low on gas but would be home soon, eventually she ran out of gas and that is when the two men carjacked and drove her two hundred miles away (they were charged with interstate kidnapping as well 1st degree murder). They were seen in bessemer city, nc about 9-12 miles from lincoln academy, at 645pm the two men where driving the vehicle, the next day Smiley was found on the ground across from the school her feet where still tied to the tree her hands were tied together she had been raped and disembowled, her car was found 75ft away burning, as far as the cemetary down there goes its on the same road that kathleen was killed but i do not believe it to be haunted if you want anymore information you can contact me a brownhe@live.com

    1. As far as I was told and had seen, a satanic cult either hangs out there or used to....I felt dread, anger and oppression there myself. After I left that area, I felt fine.

  12. The senseless abduction and brutal murder of Kathleen Smiley and Lincoln Academy has haunted our lives through memory, and our children’s through stories, for decades here in Gaston County. Everything from the ghost of Kathleen Smiley to a green or purple mist have been reported floating down the road, or haunting the old cemetery a few hundred yards from where the school once stood.

I'm a professional photographer, and a few months ago, while in the midst of a shoot at the Lincoln Academy area, my eye was caught by a curtain being drawn back on the door of an abandoned building. Instinctively, I had my camera on sequential mode and kept shooting throughout the experience. I felt an overwhelming sense to leave, which I did at that time.

Upon examination of the photographs, I realized there was someone standing behind the curtain. Upon investigation and comparing a photograph of Kathleen Smiley I was able to obtain, realized it was unmistakably her. A medium was contacted and a team did visit the sight. Kathleen Smiley is at peace – and not haunting anything. I believe this was the reason she revealed herself to me. She wanted her memory, and this horrible and tragic story, to come to a close.

So, if you visit Lincoln Academy, know that whatever you feel, see or hear is NOT Kathleen Smiley. It never was HER. She hasn't been at that location since the murder. She is no longer where I photographed her either. But, now resting in peace and happiness.

I have opted to place the photograph in my solo photography show at the Gaston-Lincoln Regional Library throughout January; however, not publish it online for fear of theft and sensationalism by the same kind of people who get drunk and drive out to the old Lincoln Academy in hopes of discovering drama. The same kind of people who have desecrated a sacred cemetery and littered the property with broken glass and aluminum cans. Neither is the photograph for sale. That is not what this is about. It's about knowing the truth and moving on.

And the truth is that Lincoln Academy, formerly Prudden Hall, was a vital part of Gaston County's heritage, especially the black heritage. It's a shame it was leveled and not preserved to begin with. But, what makes it worse, is that it's remembered for a heinous crime vs. the invaluable contribution it made to Gaston County.

    Rest in peace, Kathleen.

  13. Kathleen was killed in 1974.
Lincoln Academy was supposedly haunted a long time before. Back before the mid 60's there were tales of the place.
Even visited it a few times with my best friend and a couple of guys.

  14. I went there one time before the golf course was built. My then boyfriend and I were chased or followed by a pair of red eyes until we got back on the main road then they disappeared. I never knew about Lincoln Academy until I ran across an article on it about 2 days ago and realized that this was the same place he had taken me when I was around 19.

  15. The school is up the road from the clubhouse. The golf course has been there for a very long time. It was called grassy valley when I played it as a kid in the early 80's. The school burned down and the foundation is still there. You can see it all on google maps road view.
