Lincoln Academy Gastonia NC Update

This was posted back in April 2009. I've been back a few times since then and have pictures. Not pictures taken back in 2009. All of that content was lost but I revisited the site last year when I came back from New York and took some pictures of the cemetery. For the record I experienced nothing paranormal any time I've visited.

For those of you that don't know this is the place where Kathleen Smiley was raped and murdered back in 1974.

Actually after doing some reading online I discovered that the old school is actually located across the street from the golf course clubhouse not where the clubhouse stands as I had first thought.
It was raining the day I was there so I will be going back sometime soon to investigate and explore some more.
Many online posters have claimed to see ghosts and dark things and say it most definitely haunted. I've also read that it is a place of heavy cult worship possibly satanic. I don't know if this makes a difference or not. It's certainly worth checking out again.

I've been visiting and photographing allegedly haunted and/or abandoned houses/places/roads/highways, etc. for several years now. In the beginning it was mostly North and South Carolina but later when I started travelling extensively I started visiting places throughout the south, midwest and Michigan and Ohio and occasionally other places. Not too many are creepy but most are in disrepair and rural decay. I like photographing old houses, cemeteries, barns, old cars(restored and unrestored) nature, lakes, oceans, etc.

  1. Our paranormal research group went last week. Personally, I seriously doubt that there is anything there except for the broken beer bottles, shredded mattresses, and rusty car parts that people think they need to dump. Nevertheless, the school not longer stand and contrary to rumor, niether does the basement. All that remains are hundreds of bricks and old pipes that protrude from the earth that suggest that there was any building there are all. Across the road and down a little ways is Lincoln Academy cemetery but, as I said, I doubt it's haunted as well.

If you didn't find the school, the driveway that leads to it is accesible off the paved road that leads to the gold course. You can clearly see trash and junk strewn in the woods and that is where you need to head.

    Good luck!

  4. The tree is gone... the smoking woods are gone... the school is completely gone... the only thing left is the cemetary the grassy road that comes off of the paved one, there is a creepy house on the grassy road dont know anything about it but would love to check it out, as far as the trash all i know is that a lot of people like to hang out there, the bridge is also still there and i know people whose car has stopped when they turned it off, dont know if this helps any but its one of the scarriest places i know of.

    1. In my younger days, which were the early 60's, this used to be where all the teenagers would hang out.........the school was there and you could be talked into looking at windows and seeing movement. Also , yes the haunting may have been true or just our minds playing tricks on us.....but most of the building was still there then. It was up on the hill across from the golf course that is there now. This is where all the African Americans went to school before they came to public schools is what I hears.

  5. Went last night. I don't believe in ghosts & shit but we saw a white figure run across the field near the graveyard. Went in the house in the woods & found nothing. Then stopped on the bridge several times and turned car on/off with ease however, we heard a woman scream from the creek then the sound of someone running up it. A very distinct splashing sound not some bullshit "I thought I heard something" nonsense. Very creepy place

  6. I have been interested in this area for years, researched the incident, and visited the site several times. At times it can be very creepy, and at other times still and silent. The foundation is still there, and the area itself was very litered last time I was there a few years ago. There is no doubt that something is there, but if you are looking for a scene from the film "Paranormal Activity," you are in the wrong place. This spirit is a tragic one, not a vengeful one.

  7. In order to get a clear concise idea of the events that happened on April 21st 1974, and how the legends of Old Lincoln Academy lead investigators to the suspects you need to talk to people who were there. I had relatives, who were teenagers in the 1960's that were from a tri-county area who along with other teens hung out at the old abandoned Lincoln Academy from time to time. Lots of creepy, scarry incidents were reported during the time. Years later, in the early to mid 70's the two men who were familar with the Old Lincoln Academy from their teen years confessed to picking that location where they took their carjacking/kidnap/rape/murder victim Kathleen Smiley. They knew the area and picked it for the remoteness. The crime occurred in 1974 and the black and white crime scene photos depicted one of the most brutal murders in NC to that date. The third generation of teens in my family continue the interest in this area, while most of the adults stay far away. The interest seems to peak around Halloween. Sadly just a few years ago in an unrelated incident, some teens were killed in a car accident while on their way to school on Sparrow Springs Road. This road runs parallel to Lincoln Academy Road. I agree with the Anonymous post above, that there is "something" going on there, but I believe the spirit of the murder victim is more tragic than vengeful. Be careful if you go, and arm yourselve(s) with cameras.

  8. I go there all the time! I have researched it as well as yes it is haunted! The tree is still there and it has blood marks and barb wire marks still in the tree! Rift now there is a wire that is pretty much part of the tree like someone had tied it there and never retrieved it! Sometimes there is activity and sometimes there is not. The school stood all over that area. Itt was built in the late 1800s as a school for poor or orphan children. The principal and a few others are buried there along with other people. The graduate is haunted but I have only been there in the day. I felt a 3-4 year old boy and researched it and found an article about it later on. I have felt the wind chase us out but that's it. We go all the time because I am finally comfortable there, but u can only search so far.. It's creepy. The two men did go to jail, one died and one was set free. The place where the brick wall and a brick foundation to the right of the club house was said to be something else. No matter what I have never experienced evil but one time where I was scratched and everyone's car cut off. That was it. And we were provoking it so I guess we got what we deserved! I really wish someone could set up out there and do a real investigation because there is something else twisted w that place. If u go in the graveyard and face the end of it, stand to the right towards the woods there's no doubt you can see the club house but on many occasions I have smelt old coffee and phamayldahyde. Ghosts can and do try to get ur attention with smells sometimes. Please keep me updated in findings!

    1. I agree, I live about an hour and 20 minutes away and been there off and on since 2006. I did find some remenants of the school and could tell escavators have been out there behind the clubhouse. I have experienced unexplainable temp drops, wind from nowhere and seen one apparition fade in and out of view. I have indeed heard very faint screams either just near the bridge on Linwood or in the creek. However, there is other wildlife out there including owls. I, too, have done some research and seen some old records that were available. There were times I didn't retrieve anything at all, considering, hauntings do not happen on cue. I have seen and been in the "shack" just above the cemetery and felt evil, sorrow and dread. There IS a No Trespassing sign in the trees above the gate, you have to look up to your left, up in the trees, not only that, I believe whatever Satanic Cult hangs out there or did hang out there has opened a portal. I definitely would not hang out there alone, but, during the day doesn't bother me. That area comes alive more at night and I soully believe that Kathleen is still searching for someone, living or dead to help her get back to her home.

    2. Then again, I hope she isn't there, I hope she has found peace and has moved on. I los tmy life like that, I wouldn't want to hang around where I lost my life in such a tragic manner.

  10. It was NOT a school for "poor or orphan children," as Anonymous says on Oct. 27, 2011. It was a private, prestigous boarding school for blacks. My ancestors attended the school, and several prominent public figures also attended, including the actor Ivan Dixon and the artist John Biggers. I have experienced "very strange" activity during the day in the cemetery, where some of my ancestral relatives are buried.

    1. Interesting, I heard so many different accounts on what the school was. I am a paranormal investigator myself and I respect all historical places. I do wonder one thing, I was out there last April, the week of the anniversary of Kathleen's tragedy, and whe i was in the cemetery, I noticed an inground vault lid was a little off to the left and that bothered me and said a prayer to all the people buried there. I did feel odd being there and felt an evil vibe from the shack and my G/F at the time was being stubborn and would listen to me, she kept wondering off. For any place I and my colleagues investigate a place, we always offer peace and respect to any spirits that may be hanging around.

  11. I knew both Junior Mitchem and Charles lankford personally. They were friends of my 1st husband. I know all the details of the murder/rape/sodomy/carjacking and arson of the car. They had both just escaped from Dallas Prison Camp in Dallas, NC. They made their way to the bus station and headed south. Kathy Smiley had just turned 16 and her dad had bought her a volkswagon for her birthday. She was on her way to meet him for lunch, stopped to get gas and both boys kidnapped her. They brought her back to Bessemer City, then to the academy where they tortured/raped/sodomized/and tied her to a tree and left her to die. It took her 6 hours to bleed to death. They had sewn her mouth closed with wire, inserted a drink bottle, pine cones and a tire tool into her after they raped her. They cut off her nipples. Six hours alone tied to that tree dying. They left her there and went back to Bessemer City. My husband had heard the news on the radio on his way to work and sent someone to our house to get me and take me and our 2 babies to his mother's house. When he picked me up when he got off work and we went home, there were volkswagon tire tracks in the wet driveway. They had been there. They took the volkswagon back to the academy and set it on fire. They walked back to Junior's house where they asked his sister to take them to Gastonia. She had driven about a block when Junior jerked her head back by her hair and Charles put a knife to her throat. They told her to give them the car. She tried to refuse, but her brother Junior told her they'd already killed one bitch, one more wouldn't matter. So they took her car and she call the police and reported them. They finally caught them on Hyw 321 in front of Gaston College in Dallas NC.

  12. Me and some friends are paranormal investigators and we are going to find out if the academy and cemetary are in fact haunted by paranormal entities. And in fact i live right down the road from the infamous lincoln academy and we're going to do the whole nine yards,EVP,EMF,CAMERAS,STATIC NIGHT CAMS AND ECT..... So hopefully i can come back with proof of Kathleen Smiley haunting the lincoln adademy grounds.

  13. The senseless abduction and brutal murder of Kathleen Smiley and Lincoln Academy has haunted our lives through memory, and our children’s through stories, for decades. Everything from the ghost of Kathleen Smiley to a green or purple mist have been reported floating down the road, or haunting the old cemetery a few hundred yards from where the school once stood.

A few months ago, while in the midst of a shoot at the Lincoln Academy area, my eye was caught by a curtain being drawn back on the door of an abandoned building. Instinctively, I had my camera on sequential mode and kept shooting throughout the experience. I felt an overwhelming sense to leave, which I did at that time.

Upon examination of the photographs, I realized there was someone standing behind the curtain. Upon investigation and comparing a photograph of Kathleen Smiley I was able to obtain, realized it was unmistakably her. A medium was contacted and a team did visit the sight. Kathleen Smiley is at peace – and not haunting anything. She never was. I believe this was the reason she revealed herself to me. She wanted her memory, and this horrible and tragic story, to come to a close.

So, if you visit Lincoln Academy, know that whatever you feel, see or hear is NOT Kathleen Smiley. It never was HER. She hasn't been at that location since the murder. She is no longer where I photographed her either. But, now resting in peace and happiness.

I displayed the photograph during my show this year at the library; however, will not post it on the internet for fear of theft and sensationalism by the same kind of people who get drunk and drive out to the old Lincoln Academy in hopes of discovering drama. The same kind of people who have desecrated a lovely cemetery and littered the property with broken glass and aluminum cans. Neither is the photograph for sale. That is not what this is about. It's about knowing the truth and moving on.

It's such a shame that Lincoln Academy, in all it's wonderful historic relevance to this county, was demolished rather than renovated and preserved not because of a senseless tragedy, but because of those who wouldn't let the drama go.

    Rest in peace, Kathleen.

  16. Well I am not reading all of this because i am worried about ghosts or anything like that...I am just trying to locate the area to see if i can find any old relics with my new metal detector. I live in the area and have never been but have heard about it a long time ago. Honestly i forgot about the place until a friend told me to go there to look for relics because i was studying old sites to hunt on. So if anyone can explain in detail where it is i would greatly appreciate it. Thank you

  19. I had lived most of my life in the Crowders Mountain area. Lincoln Academy has log been a source of "interest" in the area. My aunt and her friends used to go out there before the buildings were torn down (and the murder). She'll testify to the "creepiness" of it even then; but large abandoned places tend to become "creepy" just because. I've been up Lincoln Academy Road several times, but never up the path to the cemetery. The place is dark with overgrowth and yes, very creepy.

I don't believe, no matter how horrific the death, that souls stay in this world with us after death. I do believe places become imprinted with the past activities they are part of. I've felt this at Gettysburg and Antietem. I just don't want to be part of that in this case, She didn't deserve what those animals did to her. No one does.

Here's a good tribute to Kathleen Smiley:
